NEVER FORGET - NEVER STAND DOWN

I remember the phone ringing early that morning, knowing that is not a good sign. Hearing my mothers voice on the phone, feeling myself stop breathing with a lump in my voice asking are you okay what is wrong.
She said :
"Get up"
"Turn the TV on"
"We are under attack"
I Bolted out of bed just in time to see the second plane hit..
We both screamed into the phone.
Chilled me to the bone and still does! I didn't move for days!!

NEVER FORGET NEVER STAND DOWN

That day will not be forgotten easily. I was talking to my Mom on the phone watching the news when it came on. The second plane hadn't hit yet. They announced that air traffic was suspended. Awhile later I got a call from St.John Ambulance, where I am a member, for an "all call" to the airport to help out hundreds of stranded visitors in Toronto. We were needed to set up an arena with beds and first aid coverage. Red Cross was providing food.I have never see the skies totally devoid of air traffic before. It was really eerie!

This is why I entertained the troops three times overseas. I felt I was serving my country by going and also honoring my Father, a Colonel in the Army, buried at Arlington Cemetery. I have a tribute on my blog too.

Beautiful Dar, just beautiful and sad.

That particular day, I was to drive to Mobile to meet my oncology surgeon to talk about when and how to remove the dreaded cancer from various parts of my body. It was also suppose to be my wedding day.

What a day it turned out to be.

I cry every year.

Great tribute Dar and to say "never forget, never stand down" are my sentiments exactly. As Americans, we're well known as a group for having a short memory and becoming complacent, thinking "it will never happen to us". Well, it did happen to us and it doesn't matter where you live in this fabulous country, it happened to you because you are an American and we continue to be under attack.
If our media would do their job, you'd know of the hundreds of foiled terrorist attempts our government agencies should be honored for, but instead, more time is spent on the movements of celebrities as opposed to real news.
Amen Dar, amen.

Fishing Guy-thank you, yes the songs always stop me in my tracks, That new one from Tim McGraw is chilling! Your daughter and others I know unfortunately have to share that day.

Gaston Studio-Yes, Jane it is amazing how some think. Our neighbors up there in Canada seem to think it will never happen to them. I feel NObody No place is safe this day and time with idiots that are trained their whole lifes to do just this. I have NO compassion for terrorist! Amen Jane, Amen!

I was still sleeping - we kept late hours, then - and was wakened by the fellow here to do the termite inspection. He told me a plane had crashed into the Trade Center. I thought he meant a Cesna or some small thing. Turned on the news. Saw the second one hit. Saw the towers fall. Called the people I love, people who were nowhere near NYC, just to hear them and to share in the monumental, numbing, stunning grief...and we DID grieve. All of us, wrent by it. I don't think anyone living in this nation at the time was untouched in some way by that one terrible day.

The days following, the silence was uncanny...no aircraft overhead, painting our day with sound and cross-hatching the sky with their trails of adventure. We filled the silence with talk, and tears, and anger, and fear, and...eventually...hope, strength, and solace.

When we heard planes overhead again, some of us cheered...it was a victory of sorts.

The greatest victory will be when we don't let fear stand in the way of freedom.

Shade and Sweetwater,
K

Okay, I work hard at being a smart ass. But that quote? Gives me goose bumps and it's going in a place where I'll see it every day.

I will never forget that day, or what it felt like to watch that senseless destruction happen over and over again in the news. It was so surreal.

something about this 9/11 hit me differently than the past couple of years... it's all of a sudden so long ago. It's interesting talking to my girls about it - they were both so young then - and hearing what they remember, and their takeaway. wonderful post :)

I was working when it happened. We were all glued to the tv.
And we were worried because Charlotte, NC is the second largest banking hub in the USA. Downtown Charlotte was shut down and everyone sent home.

I remember that when this happened, I was a night shift worker at the time. My ringing phone awoke me and it was a friend crying desperately into the phone. It took me a few minutes to really wake up and realize that she wasn't referring to her abusive boyfriend hitting something and then hitting again. She told me to turn on my tv and when I did I was in total shock, with the rest of our country. It was like a dazed nightmare. NEver forget 9-11. Yes, I do believe our government knew about it. No, I never trusted our government, especially after that day. To me, this is why it's important to make sure my walk with God is as close and personal in his footsteps as I can get. We are not promised tomorrow, let alone the next hour. My heart and thoughts are with all the people who lost loved-ones that day.
